The actors of Casablanca weren’t acting

The only reason Rick didn’t join in the singing and crying was because he forgot the words.
In a film filled with iconic moments, one powerful scene in Casablanca stands out for its unexpected authenticity. When Victor Laszlo orders the house band to play the French national anthem, "La Marseillaise," and Rick Blaine (Fictogram guest #683) gives his crucial nod of approval, the café patrons rise to sing in defiance against the Nazi occupation.
The scene was carefully scripted, but what made it extraordinary was the genuine emotion displayed by those performing it. Director Michael Curtiz deliberately cast actual European refugees and exiles as extras—people who had genuinely fled Nazi persecution. Witnesses reported seeing many actors crying during filming because they were real refugees reliving their experiences. Among them was actress Madeleine Lebeau, who played Yvonne and was herself a refugee who had fled across the Atlantic.
This authentic emotion profoundly enhanced the film's impact and resonated deeply with audiences during World War II. The moment became a lasting representation of the struggle against oppression, illustrating how art can reflect real-life sentiments and the power of collective spirit in the face of adversity.
