In the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, a blanket is not just bedding. It is clothing, identity, and ceremony all woven into one. At that altitude the winter’s bite, and the blanket is a practical answer to real cold. There is even a ski resort up in the highlands.

But the blanket is far more than warmth. Its patterns carry meaning, marking weddings, births, and the initiation rites that move young people into adulthood. Certain designs mark life stages, social roles, and royal connections, and the king himself wears a special blanket associated with the monarchy. A new bride may be wrapped in a blanket to wish her fertility and prosperity.

Paired with the mokorotlo, the conical straw hat shaped like a mountain peak and proudly stamped on the national flag, the blanket is the visual signature of the Basotho people. To wear one is to wear a whole nation's history stylilshly draped over the shoulders.
